Devin Desjarlais Photography Named Best Photographer in Raleigh by Wake Weekly
A few months ago, I received a message that left me a little speechless:
I had been awarded 3rd place in Wake Weekly’s “Best Photographer” category. If you’re not familiar, Wake Weekly is a community newspaper covering Raleigh, Wake Forest, and the surrounding Triangle area. What makes this award special is that it’s completely community-driven. Someone has to nominate you and then the public votes for their favorites.
Winning after just two official years in business was humbling. More than the recognition, it was a reminder of why I do this work: to document the real, messy, joyful moments of families in Raleigh and beyond. Being considered among the best photographer in Raleigh, NC is an honor I don’t take lightly.
Why Community Recognition Matters
For me, photography isn’t about accolades or awards, it’s about connection. I’ve been fortunate to watch families grow up, capture siblings finding their unique friendships, and preserve tiny newborn hands that will never stay small for long.
Take a recent in-home newborn session in North Raleigh: the older sibling wasn’t sure how to participate, the dogs were barking from the basement, and the baby had their own agenda. Instead of trying to force “perfect” shots, we let the moments unfold. The result? Candid, joyful images the family will treasure forever. Moments like these are exactly why I love being part of Raleigh’s community and why recognition like this feels meaningful.
You can see more of these storytelling moments in my Raleigh Family Photography portfolio.
What Being the Best Photographer in Raleigh, NC Really Means
When families search for a great family photographer in North Carolina’s Triangle region, I hope they find someone who does more than take pictures. They deserve someone who listens, connects, and guides them through the process so that the final images feel like them.
Here’s what I try to bring to every session:
Genuine connection: I get to know your family, your rhythms, and your unique quirks.
Storytelling approach: Instead of posed, stiff images, I capture the moments you’ll remember years from now: a toddler chasing bubbles, brothers playing legos together, a parent’s quiet glance at their newborn.
Local expertise: Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill? That’s my home turf. I know the light, the best locations, and what makes the Triangle feel like home for families.
Tips From My Experience: Finding the Best Photographer Locally
If you’re considering a family photographer in Raleigh, here are a few things I’ve learned from working with families in the area:
Look for Authenticity
Does their portfolio reflect real moments or just posed shots? I focus on capturing storytelling photos at home and at my favorite outdoor locations, letting kids be kids and families be themselves.
Ask About the Experience
A session should feel easy and relaxed. I guide families with playful prompts, gentle direction, and plenty of patience. We focus on turning the chaos into joy so that your images feel natural.
Consider Local Knowledge
A photographer who knows Raleigh and the Triangle can help pick locations that work for your family and the light, no matter the season. From early-morning Raleigh parks to cozy in-home family photo sessions, being familiar with the area makes all the difference.
Looking Ahead
Being recognized as one of the best photographers in Raleigh, NC is incredibly motivating. I’m grateful to every family who’s trusted me to capture their story, and I’m excited for the ones I haven’t met yet.
