A Wake Forest Family Photo Session That Started With a Jam Session

When planning their Wake Forest family photos, I asked this family to choose activities that reflected what they genuinely love doing together. Without hesitation, mom suggested a family jam session.

They may not consider themselves professional musicians, but that didn’t matter.

Their living room quickly filled with sound. Mom and dad picked up instruments. Their five-year-old daughter, Waverley, happily claimed the piano as her stage. She was hyper, silly, and fully herself in the best possible way. Meanwhile, seven-year-old Maxwell, who is a little more reserved but equally loving, found his own creative approach.

At one point, he laid flat on his back and attempted to play the triangle using both his hands and his feet, like an overturned beetle. Everyone else continued playing around him, completely unfazed, completely present. He was having the best time, and it showed.

These are the moments that define meaningful Wake Forest family photos. Not perfection. Presence.

The Beauty of Photographing Families at Home in Wake Forest

Walking into their Hasentree home felt like stepping into warmth itself. Yes, it was beautiful. Tall ceilings. Thoughtful design. But more than anything, it felt lived in. It felt safe.

We moved into Maxwell’s bedroom next, which had the best natural light that time of day. Shark pillows covered the floor. Toys lined the shelves. These small details mattered. They anchored the photos in this exact season of their lives.

At one point, the whole family piled onto the bed. Waverley stood behind her dad, holding his shoulders and jumping up and down. Maxwell threw himself toward his mom and kissed her so enthusiastically that she literally fell off the bed. She propped herself up on one hand while he continued peppering her with affection.

She didn’t rush him. She didn’t correct him. She simply stayed there and laughed, holding space for his love.

Including Extended Family in Wake Forest Family Photos

During the second half of capturing their Wake Forest family photos, their extended family joined us outside.

Maxwell and Waverley’s uncle was visiting from New Zealand, and their grandmother wanted photos with everyone together. We timed this portion of the session to align with golden hour, and their backyard delivered perfectly. Tall trees surrounded the yard, filtering the sunlight into a soft, even glow.

While posed photos are not typically my primary focus, they hold deep meaning for families, especially grandparents. These images become heirlooms and it was important to deliver these as part of the gallery. So you bet I delivered them!

Afterward, the family made s’mores together as the light faded. It was the perfect ending. Calm. Connected. Real.
