Because when you feel good in what you’re wearing, you stop thinking about it. You’re not adjusting fabric or wondering how things look. You’re just with your family, and that’s what actually matters in photos.

This is especially true for kids.

Family photos already ask a lot of them. They’re being guided, prompted, sometimes asked to slow down when they’d rather run. If you add in an outfit they don’t like or don’t feel comfortable in, it usually shows up pretty quickly.

A Real Raleigh Session That Changed the Way I Think About Outfits

I photographed a family this spring at the North Carolina Museum of Art, and it’s one I keep coming back to.

It was early afternoon, bright and sunny with just enough cloud cover to soften everything. We started in some open shade near the top of the park, wandered into a natural play area with more tree cover, and ended near the big oak and magnolia trees by the welcome center before finishing on the musical swings.

Before the session, mom asked me if she should guide her daughters toward certain outfits or let them choose for themselves.

I told her what I tell everyone.

Let them choose what makes them feel great.

What made this question especially important is that her older daughter is navigating level 1 autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, and a seizure disorder. She experiences the world a little differently, so things like comfort, familiarity, and personal expression carry more weight.

Her younger daughter picked a light blue dress with a breathable scarf. It felt easy and playful and completely her.

Her older daughter showed up in a glittery gold top, a flowy black skirt, and the most incredible sparkly high heeled boots I’ve ever seen.

She looked like a rock star, and she knew it.

At one point she gave me a full model walk. Later she performed a K pop dance right there in the middle of the session. She was fully herself, and you could feel how much she loved what she was wearing.

If she had been in something that didn’t feel right to her, I don’t think we would have seen that same version of her. The confidence and playfulness she brought into the session came directly from feeling good in what she chose to wear, and it shaped the entire experience for everyone there.

Why I Don’t Push the “Perfect Outfit” Look

I’ll be honest. I’m not a fan of the everyone in neutrals and linen look.

It can be beautiful, but it often feels like something gets lost. Families start to blend together instead of standing out. The little things that make your family yours get smoothed over in favor of something that looks more styled than lived in.

And when kids are asked to wear something that doesn’t feel like them, it usually doesn’t take long before that shows up in the session.

I would take a kid in sparkly boots who feels amazing over a perfectly coordinated outfit that feels forced every single time.

Not everyone has an outfit they love sitting in their closet, and that’s completely okay.
